Materials & Care Instructions

Quality
OHIO uses only the highest quality materials. Where possible, we use recycled and environmentally friendly substances and techniques.
Plywood vs. Hardwood
Where appropriate, we use high-grade seven-layer plywood in our products. Plywood is more economically and ecologically sensible than solid hardwoods in many regards. It is also structurally stronger, making it the smart choice for larger surfaces. Plywood is not as susceptible to warping, expansion, contraction, or checks (minute breaks or splits) as hardwood. Out of respect for the environment and with durability in mind, we use hardwood sparingly and where appropriate—that is, where it can be best appreciated.
Caring for Wood Surfaces
Our woods are finished with three coats of beeswax and orange oil. We have chosen this finish because it is aesthetically pleasing, all natural, reasonably easy to maintain, and not harmful to the environment. It requires a little more maintenance than spray-on chemical finishes, but is easier to repair if there is an accident. To keep your OHIO furniture looking its best, use a soft cloth to rub down wood surfaces with furniture oil or wax every six months. As time goes on, your OHIO furniture will require less and less of this regular maintenance in order to maintain a rich, warm look.
Spills should be wiped clean immediately. Avoid placing wood furniture in direct sunlight or close to any heat source, such as a radiator and furnace vent. Use coasters and placemats to avoid marking wood surfaces. Tablecloths or table runners will help prevent surface scratches. Clean wood surfaces with a soft cloth.
Steel
Steel is the most recycled product in the world. The steel we use is to lend OHIO furniture strength and durability is no exception. Depending on the variety, (sheet, bar stock, or tube) our steel can be up to eighty percent recycled. Our steel is produced in the United States, in mills supervised by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Caring for Natural Steel
Our natural steel products are finished with three coats of polyurethane wax. Despite this protective barrier, it should not be neglected. Spills should be wiped clean immediately, and it’s best to use coasters and mats to protect again surface scratches. With proper care, steel elements can retain their beauty for generations. Our steel products should be kept out of damp or wet environments unless otherwise specified.
Powder Coating
Powder coating yields an extremely durable finish for wood and metal. Powder-coat particles are electrically bonded to the substrate and then baked on. While powder-coated surfaces can last for years, they are susceptible to scratches and dings. Avoid bringing your powder-coated furnishings into direct contact with hard objects that may mar their surface. Coasters, mats, and tablecloths are highly recommended.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel requires very little maintenance. Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Clean with the grain, not against it.
Hardware
OHIO uses the best quality hardware available. In many cases, as in our hinges and drawer slides, that means hardware from top of the line Italian manufacturers. Our under-mounted drawer slides provide a clean line and self-closing action. Magnetized hinges make for a solid feel and secure closure.
Textiles
Our soft seating features superior-quality, extremely durable foam and upholstery fabric. We can also custom upholster seating to your fabric specifications.
